Here we focus on the <em>applications<\/em> of wireless sensing: How wireless sensing can be used to more effectively detect and analyze human motion and presence.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-73466ec elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"73466ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>What Are the Benefits of Wireless Sensing?<\/h3><p>Wireless sensing means using wireless technology (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/nami.ai\/blog\/what-is-wi-fi-sensing\/\">Wi-Fi<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/nami.ai\/blog\/mmwave-radar-sensing\/\">radio waves<\/a>) to detect and interpret presence and motion. Our focus in this article is explaining some of the applications of this technology and why it can out-perform other forms of sensing technology.\u00a0<\/p><p>Before looking at that, however, it is worth observing some of the general benefits and challenges associated with wireless sensing over other sensing technologies:\u00a0<\/p><ul style=\"margin-bottom: 15px; font-size: 16px; background-color: #f4f5f7; padding: 20px 45px; border-radius: 10px;\"><li style=\"font-size: 16px; padding: 3px 0px;\"><strong>Ease of installation<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">. Being unencumbered by physical wiring connections, wireless sensing devices tend to be relatively portable and easy to install. While this may not always be the case of industrial applications, in the home and commercial contexts, technologies like RFID, NFC, and Wi-Fi IoT devices are valued for their versatility and simplicity.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><strong>Cost-effectiveness<\/strong>. Without the need to substantially modify existing infrastructure, wireless sensing is generally more cost-effective than other forms of presence and motion detection. Furthermore, the ability to detect motion through walls and other physical barriers can reduce the number of sensor units required.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Scalability<\/strong>. Without dependence on an inbuilt physical infrastructure, wireless sensing technology tends to be easier to scale up for size or usage: Extra devices can be added for only a small additional cost.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Respect for privacy<\/strong>. Motion data only picks up disturbances in wireless signals, it does not transmit images or, on its own, identify people. This means it can be placed in private areas within a home where individuals may not wish to place cameras. It also means there is less of a security risk as intercepted data is unlikely to identify anyone.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-26438f1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"26438f1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>What Are the Challenges for Wireless Sensing?<\/h3><p>As with all forms of presence and motion detection, wireless sensing comes with pros and cons. Some of the challenges of using this technology include:\u00a0<\/p><ul style=\"margin-bottom: 15px; font-size: 16px; background-color: #f4f5f7; padding: 20px 45px; border-radius: 10px;\"><li><strong>It can be less effective outdoors<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">. Environmental interference with wireless waves can make the technology less effective in poor weather.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Object occlusions<\/strong>. While motion can be detected through barriers, the signal can still be affected by some physical objections such as concrete walls. This risk is best mitigated by the use of<strong>\u00a0mesh network topologies<\/strong> where devices communicate via multiple nodes, circumventing any one occlusion.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">The technology is still in its infancy<\/span>. Wireless sensing itself is a relatively new technology. This means that in some applications, like the healthcare context, it is not yet ready to be used to its full potential.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4373bb5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4373bb5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Wireless Sensing Application 1: Home Security and Monitoring<\/h3><p>Wireless sensing can detect motion within the home, and send alerts to devices informing individuals of intrusions or unusual activity.<\/p><p>Benefits of wireless sensing in this context include:<\/p><ul style=\"margin-bottom: 15px; font-size: 16px; background-color: #f4f5f7; padding: 20px 45px; border-radius: 10px;\"><li style=\"font-size: 16px; padding: 3px 0px;\"><strong>Non-line-of-sight monitoring<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">. Wireless sensing can be used to detect motion behind walls and furniture, something that can\u2019t be done with traditional motion detection technologies such as cameras.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul style=\"margin-bottom: 15px; font-size: 16px; background-color: #f4f5f7; padding: 20px 45px; border-radius: 10px;\"><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Respect for privacy<\/strong>. Multiple cameras will often need to be co-ordinated to capture areas that could be covered by one wireless sensor.<\/li><\/ul><ul style=\"margin-bottom: 15px; font-size: 16px; background-color: #f4f5f7; padding: 20px 45px; border-radius: 10px;\"><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Low cost<\/span>. As wireless sensing tends to use less computational power than other motion detection methods, it is often more cost-effective.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1f7c6cb e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1f7c6cb\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d07b6d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d07b6d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Wireless Sensing Application 2: Healthcare<\/h3><p>The world population is aging, with the section of the population over 60 expected to grow to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/development\/desa\/population\/publications\/pdf\/ageing\/WPA2015_Highlights.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1.4 billion<\/a>\u00a0by 2030. The overwhelming majority will age in the home, where healthcare and well-being monitoring can be vital.<\/p><p>Healthcare wellbeing and monitoring can be achieved by using wireless sensing for picking up on:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Unhealthy behaviors of the elderly or ill<\/strong>. Smoking, whether the individual is sedentary, or unusual movements can be detected via wireless sensing. This data can then be highlighted for caregivers or health professionals. In some cases, paraparesis and Parkinson’s may also be detected.<\/li><li><strong>Falls<\/strong>. Falls are a leading cause of death for those over 65, and something that needs to be monitoring carefully. If an elderly or vulnerable family member falls, emergency services can be dispatched and\/or family notified to their device.<\/li><li><strong>Vital sign estimation<\/strong>. Respiration and heartbeats can be detected through advanced wireless sensing applications.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Sleep quality detection<\/strong>. Based on breathing patterns, wireless sensing could be used to determine whether high-quality sleep is occurring.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Tracking medication usage<\/strong>. Motion patterns can be used to detect whether medication has been taken as expected at designated times.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><p>Some sensing technologies such as wearables or cameras may also be able to make some of the measurements listed. However, wearables have a high \u2018false positive’ count, and rely on compliance from users (not everyone will remember to wear these devices all the time). HVACs can be configured using occupancy data to alter their cooling and heating set points over long periods of time.
